In this interview Vern gets in depth with his approach to training the spectrum of strength. He begins by defining strength training for track and field as coordination training, and he emphasizes the training of movements. From there he encourages the listener to consider how muscles work together, and what this means for exercise selection. He discusses his guiding principles of strength training, and how this can help coaches make effective decisions regarding planning. This interview is foundational to the event specific strength interviews, which are to follow.

In this interview Vern discusses his outcome orientated approach to strength training and his lessons learned from his mentor Bill Bowerman. He also discusses how he trains the spectrum of strength using various blocks described as foundation, basic, power endurance, strength endurance, recycle and hybrid. From there Vern talks about specific movements to be included in each microcycle as well as exercises that have a high transfer to speed and speed endurance type events. Finally he finishes with talking about strength and coaching principles for developmental coaches to apply to be more effective.
