The Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre was established in October 2003 and is a legacy of the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics hosted in Edmonton during the summer of 2001. The Centre recognizes the lineage to this truly spectacular event. It was founded in agreement with the government of Canada through a consultative process led by the Edmonton 2001 Legacy Foundation in partnership with the University of Alberta, Athletics Canada, and Athletics Alberta. The original mandate recognized the need “to create a Canadian Centre dedicated to the participation and excellence in athletics through mentoring, training, education, competition and research for coaches and athletes at all levels of sport.”

The Centre opened at the University of Alberta in the fall of 2004 with the hiring of the Centre Director. The Centre looks for opportunities to develop and deliver programs in conjunction with Athletics Canada and it’s provincial associations. Through these partnerships we strive to enhance the delivery of the sport across Canada.

Coach Training / Education
The development of excellent coaches, from the grassroots level to the elite class, enhances the sport of athletics. It encourages our youth to participate in the sport and helps our athletes to succeed in the international arena.

Community Education / Run Jump Throw
The Centre partners with Athletics Canada to help build and activate their premiere grassroots athletic program to schools and community groups across the nation. The program is aimed at educating children in the fundamental skills needed for all sports – preparing Canadian youth for a lifetime of active living.

Sport Science
Bringing the sport science community together with coaches and athletes creates a living laboratory for performance-based research aimed at improving coaching techniques and training methods. The results are enhanced individual experiences from the developmental to the elite levels.

Athletics Development
The Centre strives to create programs that bring value to both coaches and athletes. We believe that the delivery of services to both of these groups will ultimately help Canadian Athletes reach their true potential.
