Sport Science Video Update
Tue 26 Jan 2010
Three new sport science videos have been posted this week. In our first video, Boo Schexnayder talks about a wide range of periodization concerns with regards to jumpers and how to manage an athlete’s development throughout a season. Second we have a complete breakdown of triple jumping technique in another excellent edition of Dan Pfaff’s Classroom to Track series. Lastly, Dr. Bondarchuk works with some hammer throwers in a practical session.
Please find below comprehensive summaries of the newly posted sport science videos. All videos are available under the appropriate category through the Media On Demand feature offered by the Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre. Managing Technical Development by Boo Schexnayder
This unique presentation covers the management of technique development and athlete cueing strategies. While intended as a lecture for the horizontal jumps coaches from any technical discipline will find this video enlightening. Topics include: drill usage and its relevance to technical progress, strength development and its relationship to technical training, the “art” of cueing and related considerations, the periodization of the cueing process, overloading principles with respect to technique, the management of intensities during technical training sessions and variety in technical exercise selection and development.
Classroom to Track – Triple Jump by Dan Pfaff
This unique series of videos offers athletics coaches a complete examination of proper mechanics and teaching strategies for each technical event in athletics. Each is composed of two parts: the first part is a full biomechanical video analysis by Coach Pfaff on a world class competitor. The second part is comprised of a videotaped training session of him working with an athlete in the same event discipline. This video focuses on triple jump mechanics. Topics include: Runway technique, the penultimate step, mechanics of the takeoff, efficient technique of the hop and step phases, and landing positions.
Hammer Throw Mechanics – Practical Session by Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk
This video is essentially a training session whereby Dr. Bondarchuk coaches an athlete and evaluates her technique, followed by an informal discussion led by Dr. Bondarchuk on hammer technique with a group of coaches. Topics include: the mechanics of hammer throwing and the importance of accelerating the hammer, proper rhythm in hammer throw technique, the negative transfer of the weight throw to hammer throwing, importance of the entry in hammer technique, the importance of the double support system, the use of different weight hammers and different length wires in training, the use of drills for footwork and why he prefers the “whole” method of developing hammer throw technique.
